The Mudhead Kachina, also known by the Hopi name Koyemsi or Tachukti, is one of the most recognizable and versatile figures in Pueblo culture. Appearing in nearly every major Hopi and Zuni ceremony, they serve as sacred clowns, announcers, drummers, entertainers, and even disciplinarians. Visually distinct, the Mudhead wears a knobbed cotton mask covered in reddish-brown clay with protruding ears, eyes, and mouth, and is traditionally garbed in a dark woven dress or kilt.
